Composition of the Commission
The Martha's Vineyard Commission is made up of 21 Commissioners elected by Vineyarders or appointed by elected officials, of whom 17 are eligible to vote on regulatory matters.
- 9 are elected by Vineyard voters in Island-wide elections held every two years,
- 6 are appointed on an annual basis by the Boards of Selectmen of the Towns on Martha's Vineyard,
- 1 is appointed on an annual basis by the Dukes County Commission,
- 5 are appointed by the Governor or member of the cabinet, four of whom do not vote on DRIs or DCPCs.
Officers are elected on an annual basis each December by the full Commission. The officers are the Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and Clerk-Treasurer.
If you are interested in becoming a Commissioner, you can either run in the Island-wide elections held every two years, or you could be appointed by a town, the county or the Governor or a member of his cabinet. For further information, please contact the Commission Administrator.

Mary Bernadette Budinger-CormieTisbury - Elected member at large. Commissioner since 2025. Bernadette serves as a member of the Tisbury Planning Board and is the Grant Coordinator for the public school system. While attending Boston University and obtaining a degree in Finance, she worked in the wireless data industry for over 15 years. Bernadette and her husband Leigh moved to the Vineyard 30 years ago and have made the Island their home while raising two sons. With a deep love for the Island and its community, Bernadette is honored to serve on the MVC. |

Mark GauthierOak Bluffs - Appointed by the Oak Bluffs Select Board. Commissioner since 2025. Mark and his wife have been homeowners in Oak Bluffs for over thirty years and, after retiring, became year-round residents. Last year he worked on the Oak Bluffs Public Library's 2025-2030 Five Year Strategic Plan. Mark is involved in local clubs and events. He is honored to be serving on the MVC. |

Willa KuhChilmark - Appointed by the Chilmark Select Board. Commissioner since 2025. Willa is an urban planner and director of planning at a national engineering firm. She has devoted her career to public policy and regulation to protect the environment, including land use, solid waste management, and decarbonization. |

William LakeAquinnah - Appointed by the Aquinnah Select Board. Commissioner since 2026. |

Mike MacKentyEdgartown - Elected member at large. Commissioner since 2024. Mike has been coming to the Vineyard every year of his life and moved here full time 10 years ago. Mike is a retired CIO for global companies and is currently pursuing his passions for woodworking, boating and hunting here on the island. Mike recently worked on the Edgartown Master Plan and is involved with several conservation and preservation groups on the island. |

Joan MalkinChilmark - Appointed by the Chilmark Planning Board in 2025 to replace Jay Grossman. Joan previously served as the Chilmark Appointed representative to the MVC from 2013-2024 and served as the chair from 2023-2024. She currently serves on the Chilmark Zoning Board of Appeals and Conservation Commission. She was previously a lawyer and practiced in the US and Australia. |

Ben RobinsonTisbury - Elected member at large. Commissioner since 2016. Ben is a member of the Tisbury Planning Board and is a graduate of the Syracuse School of Artchitecture. Being born and raised on the Vineyard, he feels that civic participation by residents is vital to the strength of the community. |

Doug Sederholm, Current Chair of the Land Use Planning CommitteeWest Tisbury - Elected member at large. Commissioner since 2003. Doug is an attorney. He served on the Chilmark Finance Advisory Committee and is a former MVC Chair, most recently from 2019-2020. |

Linda SibleyWest Tisbury - Elected member at large. Commissioner since 1992. Linda was the owner of the Vineyard Electronics. She is the longest-serving member of the MVC and a former MVC Chair. |

Brian Smith, Current Vice-Chair of the MVCOak Bluffs - Elected member at large. Commissioner since 2022. Brian moved to the island in 1995 and has served the island community in many capacities. He previously was the West Tisbury Select Board's appointee to the MVC from 2010-2014 and served as the Treasurer as well as Land Use Planning Chairman during that tenure. Brian also serves as a member of the Oak Bluffs Personnel Board, the West Tisbury Personnel Board and the Dukes County Personnel Board. |

Ernie Thomas, Current Clerk-Treasurer of the MVCWest Tisbury - Appointed by the West Tisbury Select Board. Commissioner since 2015. Ernie has worked in production control and planning, and is currently doing appliance repairs. He served on the Gay Head Fire Department and Dukes County Search and Rescue. |

Jannette VanderhoopAquinnah - Elected member at large. Commissioner since 2025. Jannette was born and raised on Martha's Vineyard. She is a proud member of the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe. She sits on the board of directors for the Aquinnah Cultural Center and is an elected tribal woman. Jannette is an entrepreneur and environmentalist with an MO "to teach people to respect nature through art." She has sold her unique jewelry under the name Island Naturals for the last 20 years and is also the owner of NV Gardens landscaping company. Jannette is honored to serve as the new member of the MVC. |

Peter Wharton, Current Chair of the MVCAppointed by the Dukes County Commission. Commissioner since 2022. With roots in Oak Bluffs that go back four generations and having served on both the Airport and Dukes County Commissions, Peter is proud to be the County's appointed representative to the MVC. |
